Zoom in on The Fonteyn

An insightful series of online interviews and reflections relating to The Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition. The series is aimed at future candidates for The Fonteyn, RAD teachers, members and the wider dance community.

We hear from international dance professionals like Dame Darcey Bussell DBE, Sir Anthony Dowell, Stella Abrera, Marianela Nunez, Dame Monica Mason DBE, Mlindi Kulashe, and many more. They discuss what they value in dance, preparing for a performance, Margot Fonteyn, the person and the performer, dancing Frederick Ashton’s choreography, and their own competition experiences.

Getting ready for the competition

From Zumba to meditation, three former candidates share their training routine secrets ahead of the competition.

1

"I took classes in ballet, pointe, modern, jazz, and lyrical totalling about 15-20 hours of dance a week. When I was not training in the studio I took part in many cross training activities such as running, Zumba, and Pilates."

Alyssa Churchill, Canada

2

"My routine consisted of physical conditioning with stretch bands, then a ballet class and a repertoire class en pointe. I also always practiced meditation during the night, as it helps me to have good mental health."

Denisse Landa, Mexico

3

"I trained 6 days a week: from high performance ballet training, to contemporary and Spanish dance. Outside of the dance studio, I also enjoyed yoga and body conditioning classes."

Tayla De Bie, South Africa

More from around the world

We caught up with some of the past finalists to see what they feel they have gained from taking part in the competition, from a renewed sense of confidence and self-belief to falling in love with dance all over again. Read about their experience here.

“Working on and perfecting both my solos to try to get them to the standard of the competition has been very helpful for my stamina and technique. I got lots of great feedback from the wonderful tutors in the Zoom coaching sessions the competition organised. Choreographing my own solo has also helped build my confidence with choreography. And I really enjoyed the process of learning the commissioned variation by Ashley Page, it was great to be coached by the original choreographer and it felt like a professional experience.”
