Guest performances at The Fonteyn final
We are excited to present not one, but two guest performances that will take place at The Fonteyn final this year. Celebrating the best talent Brazil has to offer, the Dalal Achcar Ballet Company will be performing the Pas de Deux, Melodia Sentimental from Floresta Amazônica. Carolina Pegurelli and Yoshi Suzuki from São Paulo Dance Company will be performing the White Swan Pas de Deux from Swan Lake Act II.

Floresta Amazônica
Pas de deux, Melodia Sentimental, by Dalal Achcar.
Dancers: Gabriela Sisto and Fernando Mendonça
Music: Heitor Villa-Lobos
It was in London that I was first enchanted by the music that Heitor Villa-Lobos created for the movie Green Mansions.
Moved by the complex interplay between orchestra and voices, and the unforgettable voice of Bidu Sayão singing the poems of Dora Vasconcellos, I began to conceive the Amazon Forest choreography.
In 1975, the first version of Floresta Amazônica, with the collaboration of Frederick Ashton, made its debut at Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro, starring Margot Fonteyn and David Wall. It returned to the stage several times over the years, and twenty-five years after its premiere, it opened the 2000 season of the Ballet of Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro, in celebration of Brazil's 500th centenary. We staged a production specially for the occasion, with new sets and costumes and moments of lyricism and drama, celebrating the beauty and mystery of one of our greatest symbols.
We now celebrate the first 50 years of the ballet, as well as marking 65 years since Villa-Lobos's death, with this performance - the best way to honour our greatest composer who, through his beautiful music, fought so much to instill in all of us the feeling of 'Brazilianess'.

Swan Lake Act II, White Swan Pas De Deux
Mario Galizzi's restage under the direction of Inês Bogéa
Dancers: Carolina Pegurelli and Yoshi Suzuki
Music: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Swan Lake was first performed by the Bolshoi Ballet in 1877. It tells the story of Prince Siegfried, who falls in love with Odette, a princess cursed by the sorcerer Rothbart to live as a swan by day. The prince vows to break the curse, but Rothbart deceives him with Odile, Odette’s evil lookalike.
The White Swan pas de deux, between Odette and Siegfried, is from Act II of the ballet where Prince Siegfried comes upon Odette by a moonlit lake. This famous duet shows Odette's initial fear of the prince disappears as he promises his undying love to break her curse. The dance is full of symbolism of Odette's vulnerability and dreams, and we see the contrast between her swan-like movements and her human form as Siegfried's strength supports her, literally, and emotionally.
