Using your bursary

Selection Criteria

We recommend that you discuss applying for a bursary with your RAD teacher before submitting it.

You must have already passed, or have a reasonable expectation of having achieved Advanced 2 (with Distinction) by 30 June 2023 (the closing date for Fonteyn candidate entries).

You must be available to travel to compete in The Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition, due to take place in London from 21 - 29 October 2023 inclusive.

On your application form, you should be able to demonstrate:

  • a strong commitment to self-development,

  • dedication to improving your skills in dance and artistry,

  • a proactive and committed approach to your dancing,

  • that you are highly motivated and keen to succeed, and

  • why you need this bursary in order to participate in the competition.

You should also explain how receiving a bursary would support you in applying for The Fonteyn. You do not have to disclose personal financial circumstances, but you should be able to describe how NOT having a bursary may affect your likelihood of being able to participate.

Each bursary will be awarded on the basis of the selection panel’s judgement. Selections will be based solely on the evidence presented in this application form.

An application submitted on this form will be considered by both schemes.

Selection Process

Please fill out the form on this page to submit your application. The closing date is Friday 17 March 2023. All applications must be received by this date to be considered for a bursary.

Decisions are made at the discretion of the Fundraising and Development Subcommittee of the RAD's Board of Trustees. Their choice of bursary recipients is final. The bursary selection process has no link with Dame Darcey Bussell DBE, the Examinations, or Artistic Departments at the RAD.

You may submit your application in your native language. If your submission is in a language that is not English, we ask you to provide a translation using Google Translate.

If you need support, please send an email to bursaries@rad.org.uk

Terms and Conditions

Bursaries will be awarded once the successful applicant has passed all the eligibility criteria and has been accepted to participate in The Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition 2023. It will not be possible to defer this bursary, although applicants are welcome to apply again in future years, regardless of the outcome of previous applications.

Bursary recipients will have their entry fee (£450) covered at source (i.e. the candidate will not have to pay the fee) and a cash payment for the remaining bursary (where applicable) will be made electronically to the bank account supplied by the applicant. We will request these details at the point of confirming the bursary, which will be by the end of March 2023. We suggest the bursary could support candidates with accommodation, travel, and equipment.

In the event that you are awarded a cash bursary and you do not participate in the competition for any reason, the bursary amount must be returned in full to the RAD by 15 November 2023.
